An Artful Way to Shop

Arts and artisan fairs let you have fun while you shop

Charlestown Gallery is maybe the most un-stuffy gallery you’ll ever peruse. The art is accessible, beautiful and affordable. Their Holiday Group Show runs December 1-31, and features paintings, sculptures, rugs, ceramics, jewelry, photography and American crafts. An open house fair on December 8 will feature visiting artists and refreshments.

Talk about holiday traditions: this year, the South County Art Association is hosting its 42nd annual Holiday Pottery and Art Sale. That’s 42 years of collecting the area’s most talented creators of drawings, photography, ceramics and paintings. SCAA will also offer a collection of handmade Christmas ornaments at the sale, which runs November 23-December 9.

There’s no rule that says art has to be expensive to be good – in fact, the Wickford Art Association is out to prove the opposite. Their Little Picture Show, running November 25-December 19, features work from local and regional artists, all at affordable prices.

The Artists Cooperative Gallery of Westerly offers a new show every month. This year, there are two holiday shows to enjoy. Through December 1, the “Small Treasures” holiday show offers small works that are big on artistic impact. During the month of December, the holiday arts show entitled “Art as a Gift” aims to change your idea of art, which isn’t just for hanging on a wall. Jewelry, pottery, even dinner plates – if it’s handmade with local love, then that’s what counts. An opening reception is scheduled for December 5, and the exhibit runs December 5-29.

The historic Fayerweather House hosts its annual Holiday Bazaar/Christmas in Kingston weekend on December 1-2. Handmade crafts from local artists and artisans will be available for sale. Free coffee and cider, a Christmas caroling performance and food prepared by Portia Little from her recipe books make the event irresistible.

Enjoy Winter’s Eve at the Library, an evening of art and music at the East Greenwich Free Library. On December 6, browse and shop from a juried art exhibit, and then enjoy a holiday concert. The winner of the art contest will have his or her own solo show at the library in 2013.
