Shop the Blues Away at Blue Hydrangea

A Wickford shop keeps it fun and nautical

Posted

Donna Trottier knows how to have fun. The owner of Blue Hydrangea opened her shop in May 2005 with a mission to make shopping local fabulously affordable. We caught up with her recently to see what’s cool for the summer.

Your Wickford shop is so cute.
I live in town and finding a small spot to start my business in the village was a dream come true. Becoming a more active participant in the local community has been very rewarding. I love getting to know the local residents as well as singing the praises of our area to the many visitors [coming] through Wickford. It is wonderful to live and work in such in outstanding community.

You carry so many affordable items.
I always aim for “adorable and affordable” personal accessories and seasonal home décor. But I also love to go outside the box every once in a while with special, indulgent items like cashmere ponchos in a delicious array of colors that I can’t get enough of. My ideal is locally made products, such as Shore Soap Company or Graceful Goods. I love when I can find a great item that is well made, local and the right price point.

Summer parties are in full swing. What’s a great hostess gift?

Sassy cocktail napkins with a spreader tied up with a great big bow is cute and useful. For something more special, a set of wine glasses with the state of RI etched on them is beautiful and very affordable. So many choices! Plus we gift wrap any gift for you with personal attention.

We love the nautical-inspired accessories and clothing you have.
It’s summer in the Ocean State! What’s not to love? It’s time to sport an anchor tee, some starfish earrings or a nautical tunic. It just says summer and it doesn’t matter if you’re vacationing or living here – every day should be enjoyed.

What’s on your summer bucket list this year?
Weekly trips to the Wickford Village Farmer’s Market (Thursdays 1-5pm), drinks on the lawn at Castle Hill, day trip to Block Island, movies on the beach in Misquamicut, sunset at Beavertail, dinner in the village at Tate’s or Tavern by the Sea after work, and of course lots of beach time. I’m so lucky to live here!
