If you’re under the age of 10, the two best things about the holidays are (a) the food and (b) the chance to mingle with the Big Man in Red. Westerly’s Weekapaug Inn offers an opportunity to feast while also meeting Father Christmas himself. A beloved tradition at the inn, Brunch with Santa features a dizzying array of buffet and a la carte items. And once you’re too full to brunch any longer, you can take a stroll through the property, which overlooks both the Quonochontaug Pond and the Atlantic Ocean. An on-site naturalist allows visitors to learn about and engage with the abundant wildlife surrounding the property.
There’s expansive tideline, bird watching classes – and the Land of Paug, the inn’s “newest family-friendly Rhode Island activity for kids (and adults) young and old.” According to lore, Paug are magical creatures that live in tiny, vibrantly decorated houses throughout the property. To see them all, be sure to get a map at the front desk.
The Weekapaug Inn is a fairytale unto itself: After the structure was renovated in 2013, the company was invited to join Relais & Châteaux, an association for excellence in hospitality. There are 31 guest rooms accented with marble bathrooms and Yankee decor, a cottage called the Salt Spray Farm, and a restaurant that serves up farm-to-table fine dining. And if brunch isn’t your thing, there is a caroling party, a Christmas Day dinner, “yule log” workshops, and cookie decorating classes at the sister hotel, Watch Hill’s Ocean House.
Brunch with Santa takes place on December 9 and 16.
