See what's on your independent big screens this weekend

Posted

AVON
Starting this Friday is Coming Home, from legendary House of Flying Daggers director Zhang Yimou. Trading kung-fu heroics for melodrama, Coming Home tells the story of Lu Yanshi, who returns home after spending time in a labor camp during the Cultural Revolution of China. Upon returning, however, he finds out his own family no longer recognizes him. Epic in scope yet devastatingly heartbreaking, Coming Home is bound to move an audience to tears.

Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief director Alex Gibney provides a perfect companion piece to the fall's hottest biopic with Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine. This unflinching documentary investigates the technological innovator and his legacy, painting a portrait of a brilliant, bold, and often brutal iconoclast.

For one night only, National Theatre Live presents a performance of Hamlet, William Shakespeare's timeless tale of paranoia and patricide. Starring Academy award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular prince of Denmark, experience the classic play on the big screen.

CABLE CAR
Playing into next week is documentary Meet The Patels, a comedic look into the life of Ravi Patel as he manages the madness that occurs when cultures clash in the name of love. What elevates this documentary, however, is how it reveals the often unexplored issues that lie beneath stories with this set-up, such as questions of cultural assimilation and the complex nature of tradition.

The Austrian horror film Goodnight Mommy, which has already terrified most of the internet with its trailer alone, will be playing this weekend. Set in an isolated lakeside house, Goodnight Mommy tells the visceral story of two brothers as they deal with the changes their mother has undergone due to her cosmetic facial surgery, both in her appearance and in her behavior. Produced by the infamously punishing Ulrich Seidl, director of 2013's Paradise trilogy, this brutal film specializes in shredding nerves and making skin crawl.

JANE PICKENS
Starting Friday is A Walk in the Woods, the adaptation of Bill Bryson's novel. Starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte as the irascible Stephen Katz, A Walk in the Woods follows the two as they brave the obstacles presented by the Appalachian Trail and their tenuous relationship.

The documentary Meet the Patels will also be screening until next Thursday, 10/22.
