The Luck of the Find

Posted

When Kathy Wilson ended her previous career, she was looking for something that would give her a flexible schedule and the freedom to pursue the things she loves: namely, consignment shopping. “I realized it was just the thing I was looking for,” she says. Now, Kathy’s Perennials Consignment is so popular that she just moved to an expanded location. “I love being a part of the community in South County,” Kathy says. “I meet and work with so many wonderful people to promote ideas of sustainability and thrift in a world dominated by fast fashion.”

What makes Perennials unique?
I think we are most known for our variety and prices. We have a very organized selection of clothing and accessories for women and men of all ages and sizes, including jewelry, shoes, formalwear, active wear, suits, scarves, hats and handbags. We also offer private parties where the host and a minimum of 10 of her friends can have a private shopping experience, outside of our regular hours, with discounted rates and snacks.

What’s the style of the store?
We have casual, formal and active wear in all shapes and sizes. In South County, we find that the majority of our shoppers are looking for casual wear. We are always on the lookout for great leather shoes and handbags. At Perennials we are not snobby about brands, but we do look for nice quality clothing and jewelry made of good fabrics, leather, sterling, wool and cotton. It is not just about the brand for us… quality and cuteness are everything.

We hear you offer styling and personal shopping.
We can offer personal shopping experiences for our visitors if they need extra help accessorizing or putting whole outfits together. I think some of our customers feel very comfortable shopping with us. We love providing our customers with honest feedback and assistance finding just the right looks to make them feel great.

Tell us the secret to finding really great deals – do things get marked down as time goes on?

We try to keep it simple. We always have a sale that never changes. If it is over 30 days old, an item is 20% off. Over 60 days old, it is 50% off. We then have occasional additional sales. The best way to find out what is happening with us is to like us on Facebook for up-to-date news on sales, events and interesting new arrivals.

Pro Tip time: How do consignors make the most money selling clothes?
Consignors that do best with us supply us with amazing quality and well-cared-for items from within the last couple of years. We do have a small section of vintage items that is now gaining more attention from the younger shoppers.

Tell us about your new space. Why the move?
Perennials had been in the same location for over 25 years. In the last few years we have expanded our customer base so we found the need to expand our physical space to meet the needs of our shoppers. We needed more room to increase our men’s selection, as well as add some room for our vintage items.
